Holidays & Celebrations

FLAG DAY (June 14th)

What is this holiday & why is it celebrated?

National Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th each year.  It is the day when Americans remember the time in 1777 when the leaders of the United States approved the design for the first national flag.  Before its creation, each of the states in the United States had its own flag to represent its people.  Flag Day is a day when Americans celebrate the unity of the American people under the symbolism of the American flag & the ideals which it represents.

It is a time when fathers, daddies, dads, pops, peres, babas, opas & papas of all kinds are celebrated for their protecting & guiding ways.  While it is common around the world to have a day that celebrates fathers, most other countries celebrate on a different day than in the USA.

Executive Functioning

Executive Functioning (EF) is basically the brain's management system.  EF is a set of mental skills including working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control that are used daily to learn, work, and manage daily life.

Trouble with executive function can make it hard to focus, follow directions, and handle emotions, among other things.

Social-Emotional Tips

Social & emotional development, especially in early childhood, provides a critically important foundation for children in developing & learning throughout their lives.

Family Fun Night Idea

Let's Play Badminton

Get Out & Play - Badminton

Badminton is a racket sport played on a rectangular court divided by a net. Players score points by striking a shuttlecock (also called a "birdie" with their racket so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents’ half of the courtIt involves running, jumping, and quick movements, which strengthen the heart and keep kids fit. It also requires fast reactions and precise shots, which improves coordination between the hand and the eyeBadminton is a great way to keep kids active, have fun, and learn a new skill.

Family Movie Night

MJR Theater Summer Movie Specials for June

MJR Theaters are offering certain family friendly movies to be shown over the summer for ticket costs of $3. These are fun, air conditioned, budget friendly opportunities for fun for this summer!

After watching the movie, try these enrichment activities:

Making Connections Activity ("Shrek 2"): Have your child identify which character your child wishes were real so your child could meet the character. Discuss why your child would like to meet that character. Have your child draw a picture showing what they would do together and have them write about the things they would do on a special day

Story Elements Activity ("Bad Guys"): Stories can be discussed in terms of the "Story Elements".  This Youtube video might help you understand story elements & how to identify them.  Complete a “High Five” with your child using the five fingers/thumb on your hand. Identify the following as you move through your fingers: 1- characters (WHO or what does or says something in the movie); 2- setting location (WHERE does the story take place); 3- setting time (WHEN does the story tale place: present, past, future); 4- Plot (WHAT happens in the story); 5- Lesson identification (WHY did the events take place)

Genre Discussion Activity ("Land Before Time"): Discuss what fiction and nonfiction are (This Youtube video on fiction & nonfiction might help you... it talks about books but the same applies to movies). Discuss how there can be elements of nonfiction present in fiction. Identify how the story portrayed in the movie is fiction (e.g. talking animals, human behaviors, non-humans wearing clothes, etc.). Have your child draw a scene from the movie. Make a list of things that are real-like and things that are make believe in that scene.
