Holidays & Celebrations

LABOR DAY (September 1st)

What is this holiday & why is it celebrated?

Labor Day is celebrated in the United States of America on the first Monday of September every year. Labor Day is commonly celebrated in other countries but on different dates. This is because Labor Day is an important holiday to honor all workers that make the country move & succeed every day.  In the USA, Labor Day is often considered to be "The End of Summer".  Most schools are back in session following Labor Day.

How can we celebrate this holiday?

Executive Functioning

Executive Functioning (EF) is basically the brain's management system.  EF is a set of mental skills including working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control that are used daily to learn, work, and manage daily life.

Trouble with executive function can make it hard to focus, follow directions, and handle emotions, among other things.

Here are some great resources for practicing visual discernment:

Social-Emotional Tips

Social & emotional development, especially in early childhood, provides a critically important foundation for children in developing & learning throughout their lives.
Social development refers to the ability to initiate, create, foster, & sustain meaningful relationships with adults & peers.
Emotional development refers to the ability to express, recognize, interpret, & manage one's emotions & the ability to respond appropriately to others' emotions.

Is your child anxious about going back to school of being away from you?

Do you have a child who is anxious about school, being away from you, starting a new school, who fidgets, struggles with focus?

As the new school year approaches, consider getting a pair of friendship necklaces for you to share with your child!

Let your child choose one and you keep the other. Wear it, hang it from your rearview mirror, add it your keychain… then, set aside a specific time each school day when you and your child can both “share a moment” by mindfully holding the charm and sending good vibes to one another.

You can choose to say a prayer together or “I love you” or murmur your nicknames for each other to feel closeness at that moment wherever you may be.

Your child can also hold the necklace charm any time there is anxiety, fear, uncertainty, or uneasiness to think about you, take a breath & face the day!

Family Fun Night Idea

Let's Play Hopscotch

Developing Executive Function Skills through Hopscotch!

Play a game of hopscotch as you make your way to the car, the bus stop, or the classroom!  It's a great way to help kids

As kids hop their way into class, and by the time they reach the door, something has shifted.

Their breathing has deepened. Their bodies have found rhythm. Their nervous systems have reset because movement regulates us before words ever can.

Every hop is building brain connections needed for reading. Every "wait your turn" moment is strengthening impulse control. Every giggle is creating community.

One teacher realized that as kids play hopscotch, teachers/parents stand there watching, feeling their own stress from the morning rush, the endless to-do list, the challenging day ahead. So, she thought it would be beneficial to join in to the hopscotch path , too. Here is a quick tip sheet that she created which breaks down the neuroscience behind this simple game.
